Bird Seed

Find your flock! This project started with my friend Ethan and I’s shared love of birds. They are funny animals and always seem to have such strong personalities. Around the concept of birds we built a game that gives you the opportunity to play as a little old-lady, making her way around a fictional city collecting a flock of various birds.

All textures and colors in the game were created through the same artistic process Eric Carle employs wherehe paints abstract patterns on paper that are then collaged together into different images. After spending several hours painting like kindergarteners we scanned all of our artwork so we could use the colors and textures we’d created.

The game itself is almost like a more elementary version of monopoly. You can travel around the board as much as you’d like collecting birds of different values until you decide to return home and finish the game. To pay for your birds you collect bird seed tokens as you move. If you land on certain spaces that mean you must pull a situation card. These cards can cause you to gain or lose birds, and sometimes create roadblocks for your opponents. Whoever finishes the game with the highest number of points for your birds wins. Good luck!

Scans of Abstract Painted Colors

We painted dozens of sheets of paint with acrylic and tempera to create a wide range of textures and colors to work with for our alphabet and illustrations. We had a field day with these! We felt like kids in elementary art class again :)
